Introducing Sydney rock band We Are Not Robots

First formed in 2016, Sydney rockers We Are Not Robots are the brainchild of singer-songwriter guitarist Pete Konakov, formerly of Capital Colors and Sounds Of Coma.

With two singles (from their next album) already released in 2021, We Are Not Robots’ new song is “What Are You Waiting For?” which presents an alternative rock style worthy of the band’s influences: Smashing Pumpkins, Placebo and Shihad.

“‘What are you waiting for?’ is live and we can’t wait for you all to be a part of it, ”the group posted on their social media.

“Many thanks to Ryan Cramp of Tigermoth Recording Studio for letting us see the light on this track and forcing us to release it. It only took a year!”

Who are we, we are not robots … I’m Pete, I sing and play the guitar. There’s also Lee on bass, Amanda on drums, and Ava on guitar.

It looks like… We are what would happen if Placebo, Failure, and Shihad had babies in a studio with Steve Albini presiding over the design.

Our first gig was … September 2016 at the Bald Faced Stag, which became the astonishing Crowbar of Leichhardt (Sydney). We opened for mine and Lee’s other group, Capital Colors. Even though that was back when we were a duet with just me and another guy on drums.

When did you choose the name of the band, and was it a unanimous decision … Right before the first show. We needed a name and thought it was a joke and it stuck. The drummer at the time liked it, so we did and now here we are.

In the studio, we are used to … We master the art of remote recording. Usually I play all the instruments in my home studio to get the initial idea, and then I get everything else from the rest of the band. Then it all goes to our producer / mix engineer Ryan Cramp at Tigermoth Studios for tweaking.

If we could do a tour with someone … I would love a triple bill from us, Foo Fighters and Biffy Clyro. I’ve heard that DG is an absolute legend at opening bands so it would be cool to tour with someone who isn’t a tool and the boys at Biffy are super nice. Also, every time I die. It would be the most epic of the benders.

Social networks are … Unfortunate. A petri dish of unnecessary opinions, trolls and predators of plastic keyboards. A scene for people who shouldn’t have one. It is now part of our daily life, so we have to live with it. I mean it’s coming out on social media so we need it haha!

My favorite app right now is … Fiton and an intermittent fasting app called Zero. It’s great for getting rid of COVID barrels!

Our most embarrassing moment to date has been the weather … Our first show. It was a disaster! We tried to do it in two parts, but we failed miserably. That’s why we recruited Lee on bass.

Life on the road can be … Amazing if you do it with the right people.

If you have us on your bill, all we ask is that our jumper contain … Lots of Powerade, lager, cabernet sauvignon, chamomile and peppermint tea, and lots of water.

The scariest scenario we found ourselves in was … Lee had to rush me to the hospital before a show once because I thought I was having a heart attack. Also leaving the stage and coming home halfway through a set of Capital Colors for the same reason. Turns out I didn’t have a heart attack. It was still quite scary.

Which celebrity / famous person would you like to be the spokesperson for the band … God himself, Paul McCartney. Dave Grohl is right behind. I mean, if they dig you in, I guess you did it right?

If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? I lived in Belgrade in my twenties and would happily do it again. The food is incredibly good and it has a soul like nowhere else on this earth. I would split my time there and the North Shore of Oahu in Hawaii just for the food trucks and the beaches.

Three people you would like to invite around a dinner … Lee, Amanda and Ava. We have to discuss the finish of this album.

If we came to your place, what would you cook for us? The most amazing Paprikash you have ever tasted, followed by Cevapi and Pljeskavice.

When it comes to pets, are you a lover or an enemy of our furry friends? LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVER We all have pets. I just had a kitten; his name is Lenny Enchilada.

Whatever the expense, send me a case of … Cabernet Sauvignon. I’m back on that red train after a while.

The last time I saw the interior of a gym it was … Pre-containment. I’ve moved into my home now with everything I need, so I’m in no rush for them to reopen. Not very rock & roll, but I’m trying to survive a pandemic.

What is the chore that you hate the most? Clean the bathroom. Who likes this?

Do you have phobias? I don’t like heights at all. I also became tired of the needles from the night Lee rushed me to the hospital. Let’s just say a student nurse tried not to take my blood when I was severely dehydrated. One does not go with the other! I became her pin cushion and she hit some real nerves.

Would you ever be on a reality TV show? In fact, I really liked “Rockstar: INXS” and “Supernova” in the mid-2000s and wish I could have participated in them. When potential singers sang for their lives, they chose songs from Stone Temple Pilots, Failure and other bands that really interested me. You never see that. Nothing else since, however.

If you could play a prank on one of your friends, who is your target and how do you take them down? Oooooo my best mate. Barry is the greatest prankster I know and he welcomes me every week. It is the master. I’ve tried having it so many times, even tampering with screenshots and documents, and it never falls into the trap. My poker face sucks.

The best local takeout joint for a midnight meal that will leave you in an eating coma? Epic Pizza in Enmore does a great gig after a slice. Otherwise, the Asia bar in Annandale is the deal or an all Manoosh tabouli wrap with grilled chicken and haloumi. Drool!

Which fictional character best describes your personality? Any extrovert introvert. I watched something recently and thought, wow, this guy is me. It was probably a character of Paul Rudd.

The last show that you watched in a row? ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ and ‘Ray Donovan’. Do the two back to back. Have also binged ‘The Sopranos’ and ‘Entourage’ in their entirety about eight times at least.
