Instead of just tying the song together, it’s the cornerstone of the whole track, without which nothing else was going to work. However, to achieve perfection, it all depends on how the riff serves the song.

Compared to the usual riff that plays nonstop, these riffs are placed just in the right place and are able to announce their presence every time they come out. After that rock was no longer just a bunch of chord strumming guys. It was something much more gritty and heralded the new regime of what music was going to be.

Some of the best riffs usually come from intentionally trying to outdo yourself. What first inspired you to buy a guitar?

“When I was 11, my dad took me and my brothers to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers. At one point in the show, John Frusciante sang and played a song all by himself called May be by the Chantels; it was just such a powerful and cool thing to see. The next morning, I asked my parents for a guitar.

Tell us about your main guitar and pedal setup.

“I go back and forth between my Harmony Rebel and my Heritage H-150, but right now I’m really feeling my Rebel. Regarding the pedals, I keep it pretty simple. I mainly use my Analog Man King of Tone, a Strymon Flint and a Teisco Delay pedal. I have other pedals like a wah, chorus, and compressor, but I only really use them for covers or sideman stuff.

What do you look like and what is interesting about your approach to the guitar?

” This is a difficult question ! I’m mostly influenced by blues rock and 70s soul music, but I had a phase of shredder and 80s jazz fusion as a kid, so I think it all shows in my playing. think I have my own sound as a guitarist but I’m not reinventing the wheel [laughs]. What’s interesting about my game is the way I play with my brother Jordan. He started bass right when I started guitar and we learned everything together, the way we play is supposed to complement each other.

What attracts you to Harmony and Heritage guitars?

“I have always been interested in Heritage guitars because they are a continuation of this golden age of guitar making. Before I bought the H-150 I was on a real vintage kick and had some cool guitars, but the problem with a lot of these player-grade vintage guitars is that they’re not concert guitars. the most durable. The H-150 gives all the vintage hard rock sounds I want, but it’s longer lasting, stays better in tune, and plays amazing!

“The Harmony is perhaps my favorite guitar for recording because with its incredible playability it is so versatile. I can squeeze some big rock sounds out of it with riffs, but it also has an amazing clear sound. My producer Justin Craig was so blown away by this when we recorded that he got one too!

What does Justin’s production style bring?

“So many things, he’s like a third band member when we’re in the studio. In addition to playing drums, keys and sometimes additional guitar. It really helps us take the fat out of our song ideas and elevates them to an even better place. He tries to bring out the best version of us.

When will your next album be released and which song do you think stands out the most?

LESLIE WEST (born LESLIE WEINSTEIN), the tall guitarist of fame “MISSISSIPPI Queen” with his band MOUNTAIN, died WEDNESDAY morning at the age of 75. He had suffered cardiac arrest at his home near DAYTONA, Fla., On MONDAY and was rushed to a hospital, where he never regained consciousness.

Released in 1970 on MOUNTAIN’s debut album, “Climbing!” “MISSISSIPPI Queen” was, according to ROLLING STONE, “two and a half minutes of turbulent bliss built around the howls and guitar sounds of WEST and the completely unironic cowbell of drummer CORKY LAING”. The song became an anthem of the era, appearing in soundtracks, television shows, and the Guitar Hero III video game. WEST told GUITAR PLAYER in an interview that the song “has everything you need to make it a winner. You got the bell, the riff is damn good, and it sounds amazing. It feels like it. wants to jump out of your car stereo. To me, that looks like a big thick milkshake. It’s rich and chocolatey. Who doesn’t like that? “

WEST was a giant among the rock guitar gods, compared to ERIC CLAPTON, JIMMY PAGE and JIMI HENDRIX at their peaks. In 2011, EDDIE VAN HALEN told ROLLING STONE that WEST’s RITCHIE BLACKMORE and DEEP PURPLE were among his biggest influences:

Born LESLIE WEINSTEIN on OCTOBER 22, 1945, the gritty-voiced WEST grew up in the NEW YORK area as a founding member of VAGRANTS, scoring two minor hits, “I Can’t Make a Friend” and a cover of “OTIS REDDING “Respect” before WEST left the band.

With the help of producer and bassist CREAM FELIX PAPPALARDI, WEST released a solo album, “Mountain”, which became the name of the group the two men formed, as WEST said with regret because “I was large”.

MOUNTAIN was presented at the WOODSTOCK festival on the second day between CANNED HEAT and THE GRATEFUL DEAD.

“I think I had the most amplifiers of them all out there,” WEST told ROLLING STONE. “It was paralyzing because this scene, this setting, was a kind of natural amphitheater. The sound was so loud and shocking that I got scared. But once I started playing, I kept going because I was afraid to stop.

MOUNTAIN broke up in 1972, WEST forming a power trio with MOUNTAIN drummer CORKY LAING and CREAM bassist JACK BRUCE. The band released three albums and sold out CARNEGIE HALL, but in 1974 WEST reformed into MOUNTAIN for two more records.

WEST went solo with “The Great Fatsby”, with “High Roller”, co-written by WEST with MICK JAGGER and KEITH RICHARDS; with JAGGER playing the guitar.

WEST’s health had been a problem in recent years, with heroin addiction and diabetes resulting in the amputation of his right leg. Her weight has continued to fluctuate over the years.

WEST moved to DAYTONA last month. He is survived by his wife JENNI MAURER; whom he married on stage at a WOODSTOCK 40th anniversary concert in 2009.
