Blues-rock guitar fireball Joe Bonamassa to honor country music greats at Humphreys
Joe Bonamassa’s decision to bill his 2018 US Summer Tour as “the guitar event of the year” might be questioned by anyone who attended Jeff Beck’s stellar performance on Sunday at the Mattress Firm Amphitheater.
But Bonamassa’s pending tour, which opens with a pair of shows Thursday and Friday at Humphreys Concerts by the Bay, will get a welcome new twist.
In the past, this blues-rock fireball and PBS TV favorite has paid tribute to BB King, Muddy Waters and other towering blues legends.
For this tour, he will rather salute the work of four imposing legends of country music: Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and George Jones. Unsurprisingly, Bonamassa will give his classic songs a blues-rock tinge.
To provide a resonant home, down – or is it Down Under? — flavor, Bonamassa’s band will be rounded out by vocalist and rhythm guitarist Troy Cassar-Daly, one of Australia’s leading country music artists.
